“Give Me Understanding…” Part 1

Psalm 119:144 “The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live.”

As we go through life, sometimes we can’t seem to make heads or tails of what is happening to us. Sometimes, we are so clouded over with lack of understanding that we can’t see through the clouds to know what we need to deal with. It’s easy to become clouded with all the entertainment and worldly pleasures that take our focus off God. It’s easy to go into church and be sidetracked by the music, the lack of teaching, the lack of understanding of God’s Word, and the preaching that is designed to make you feel good about yourself instead of show you where you’re wrong and lead you the right way.

It’s like walking into a dark room that has a few cobwebs right at the door. You brush those away then you take another step forward. Where you thought there was only a few cobwebs at the door, you suddenly realize there were a few more past the door. You begin brushing those to the side and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness of where you are standing. You think you have brushed away all the cobwebs and so you take another step. Your forehead hits something and you realize there are more cobwebs to brush away. This continues with each step you take. What will it take to bring the light into this dark room? What will it take to get all those cobwebs brushed away until there are no cobwebs left?

First, our understanding must be opened to realize that we are wicked sinners in need of Christ This is only the beginning. When Christ illuminates our heart, we realize we are lost and undone before God and we need Him to change us. We cannot do this on our own because we are “dead in our trespasses and sins, we walk according to the god of this world and seek to please him. We are children of disobedience and we want our own way no matter who it hurts” (Eph 2:1-3) We love Satan and seek to please him whether it’s in little things or big things. Our heart belongs to him and we are the children of disobedience. As we begin to see this and see how wrong we’ve been in our life and the Lord convicts us of our wickedness, our understanding is given to us by God. We begin to see that there was it was necessary for Christ to die on the cross for our sins. There is no way to get to heaven except through the Lord Jesus Christ. He says, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man comes to the Father except through Me” John 14:6. Jesus came to earth as a babe, grew up to be a man then died on the cross, was buried in the tomb then rose the third day. He was taken up to heaven and will one day return to take His bride home to be with Him in heaven. (1 Cor 15:1-4). Not all who say, “Lord! Lord!” are true believers. Only those who do His will are His true children. (Matt 7:21)

In the example of the darkened room full of cobwebs, we begin to realize the first step is to have the room illuminated so we can see. The hurt and pain can never be cleansed away until the Lord illuminates our hearts with His light. When He cleans the sin out of your heart than you can say, “He gave me understanding and I now live!”
